Blanco White is the project of Josh Edwards. The name was inspired by the Spanish writer José María Blanco White.
Originally from London, Josh travelled to Latin America at the age of just 10, sparking a lifelong fascination with the Spanish-speaking world. He studied Spanish at university before moving to Cádiz, Spain, where he studied flamenco guitar under the guidance of Nono Garcia. He later travelled to Sucre, Bolivia, to learn the Andean instrument charango. Both instruments became key elements of Blanco White’s distinctive, otherworldly sound and songwriting.
The identity of the project has continuously evolved since Blanco White’s first releases in 2016, but a fascination with language, surrealism and musical curiosity has always remained at its core. Working with Brazilian co-producer Pilo Adami on his second album, Tarifa, an increasing emphasis on rhythm combines with the reverb-heavy and meditative sound of his earlier recordings.
Following the release of his debut album, On The Other Side, in June 2020, Josh took a two-year break from music to recover from a serious neurological condition. Blanco White returned in 2022, supporting José González and Gregory Alan Isakov on tours across the UK and Europe. New music followed in the form of the intimate EP Time Can Prove You Wrong, centred around the process of healing.
Tarifa was released in September 2023, followed by a global tour that included sold-out shows at The Barbican in London, The Troubadour in Los Angeles, Paradiso in Amsterdam and many other prestigious venues.
