Born in Canton, Ohio, Gray originally planned to pursue a career in screenwriting. Music was never part of the plan until the singer who was meant to record one of her demo songs failed to show up. She stepped behind the microphone herself, and one of the most recognizable voices of her generation was born.

Her breakthrough came in 1999 with the release of her debut album On How Life Is. The record achieved triple-platinum status, while its lead single “I Try” became a worldwide hit, earning Gray a GRAMMY® Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Throughout her career, she has also received five GRAMMY® nominations, won two BRIT Awards, and sold more than 25 million albums worldwide.

Macy Gray’s music blends soul, R&B, funk and jazz with contemporary production, creating a sound that is both timeless and unmistakably her own. Over the years, she has collaborated with artists including Ariana Grande, Bobby Brown and Galactic, while her live performances continue to captivate audiences across the globe.

Alongside her music career, Gray has appeared in numerous film and television productions, including Training Day alongside Denzel Washington, For Colored Girls, Brotherly Love, Cardboard Boxer, and the Netflix series Fuller House.

In recent years, Macy Gray has continued to evolve creatively. In 2023, she released The Reset with The California Jet Club, an album exploring themes of loneliness, resilience and human connection. A year later, she teamed up with Big Freedia for the single “I AM” – an energetic celebration of authenticity, self-acceptance and individuality.
